Insulate Your Attic Properly
HOMEMost homes in Lexington, SC are underinsulated, and the attic is one of the most important areas to add insulation. It not only reduces air leaks and heat loss but it can also prolong the life of your roof, improve your home’s energy efficiency and make it a healthier place to live.
Adding the right type of insulation to your attic and properly sealing the space around ducts will prevent unwanted heat loss in the winter and unwanted heat gain in the summer. This is not only an affordable project but it can save you hundreds each year on your energy bills.
How to Insulate Your Attic the Right Way
There are a few different types of ENERGY STAR insulation available and each has its own sizing, R-value and installation requirements. Some require professional contractors while others are suitable for moderately challenging do-it-yourself projects.
The most common type of attic insulation is fiberglass batts, which are made of tiny fiberglass slivers fused together with a vapor retarder. This insulation has an R-value of between R-2.9 and R-3.8 per inch and is the cheapest to install.
For the best results, when insulating your attic, add a second layer of fiberglass rolls, making sure to lay each roll perpendicular to the first. Also, remember to create barriers with sheet metal or wire mesh to keep the insulation away from any fixtures in your attic (or soffit vents) that are not designated “insulation contact” or IC.
Insulating the exterior walls of your home can be more expensive and is best suited for a professional contractor but may be worth the investment if you live in a cold climate. It is important to correctly air seal your attic before insulating the walls.
